Cinder is proud to join the Christchurch Call, a multi-stakeholder community established after the terrorist attack that killed 51 people in a Christchurch, New Zealand mosque on March 15, 2019. The attack was live-streamed online and versions of that video were distributed across the internet, where some still linger today. No set of good deeds can balance the moral ledger after an attack that kills so many innocent people, but the Call represents a model for governments, companies, and civil society to come together and demand better - of themselves and each other.

The internet has brought so many people together for tremendous good, but malicious actors have stalked this infrastructure from its inception. They use it to recruit, propagandize, plan, and celebrate violence. No government, company, or organization can prevent this abuse on their own, but together we can mitigate it. Helping companies detect and manage abuse by malicious actors is central to Cinder’s mission, and so we are proud now to raise our voice alongside many others to honor the Christchurch victims by demanding more of ourselves and others to ensure that the internet is not used for such an attack again.

“We are delighted to have Cinder and Seznam join the growing Call Community,” says Paul Ash, New Zealand's Special Representative for Cyber and Digital.

“They both demonstrate innovation, have useful tools and expertise, and are well-aligned with the mission of the Christchurch Call. We look forward to the valuable contribution they will make.”

Henri Verdier, Ambassador for Digital Affairs in France also welcomed Seznam and Cinder.

“These two important new stakeholders show that the Christchurch Call is answered by more and more actors and remains relevant to the issues of today.”

Countering Terrorism on Digital Platforms

Digital communications platforms are part of the geopolitical battlespace - and that reality will test platforms in new ways. No company will balance all the considerations perfectly – that cannot and should not be our expectation – but those companies that prepared for these moments will manage better than those that did not.
